Transferring calls via IP phones

How do I transfer live calls through my IP phones?

Call Transferring is one of the many features of an IP phone that is useful to route callers to a specific extension or department.  To learn how to do this, select your device for specific instructions:

Polycom VVX Series Phones

Cisco IP Phones

Polycom VVX Series Phones

Note: The Default Transfer Type is Consultative Transfer for Polycom VVX Series Phones.

Consultative Transfer

  1. While on a call, press the Transfer key.
  2. Enter the Extension number, Local or Long Distance phone number.
  3. Press Transfer.
    Note: This is assuming that your phone’s Default Transfer Type is set to Consultative.

Blind Transfer

  1. While on a call, press the Transfer key.
  2. Enter the transfer target extension number, local or long distance phone number.
    Note: This is assuming that your phone’s Default Transfer Type is set to Blind.
  3. Wait for couple of seconds for the transfer to complete automatically, or press the # (Hash key) to dial out.

Transfer Directly to Voicemail

  1. While on a call, press the Transfer key.
  2. Enter *0 (asterisk and then zero), and transfer target extension number.
    Note: This is assuming that your phone’s Default Transfer Type is set to Blind.
  3. Wait for couple of seconds for the transfer to complete automatically, or press the # (Hash key) to dial out.

Changing the Default Transfer Type on Polycom VVX Series Phones

  1. Press the Menu key.
  2. Press Settings.
  3. Press Basic.
  4. Press Preferences.
  5. Press Default Transfer Type.
  6. You can choose Consultative or Blind.

Changing the Default Transfer Type While on a Call

  1. While on a call, long press the Transfer key.
  2. Select the Call Transfer type.
  3. On the new call screen, while getting the dial tone, enter the transfer target extension or number.
    Note: If Blind Transfer was selected, wait for couple of seconds for the transfer to complete automatically, or press the # (Hash key) to dial out. If Consult Transfer was selected, press the Transfer key to complete the call transfer.

Cisco IP Phone

Attended Transfer

  1. While on a call, press the Xfer key.
    Note:  For Cisco SPA525 or SPA525G2, press Transfer.
  2. Enter the Extension #, Local or Long Distance phone number.

    For Cisco SPA525 or SPA525G2, do either:

    • Enter the number to where you want to transfer the call or
    • Press Directory and choose a number from the personal directory
  3. Press Dial.
  4. Press Transfer.

    For Cisco SPA525 or SPA525G2, do either:

    • To transfer the call without waiting for the other person to answer – press Transfer after the call begins to ring and hang up. If you hang up before the second call rings, the transfer fails and the first call is disconnected. If you misdialed, press the second line button again to receive a dial tone.
    • To transfer after speaking privately to the other person – press Transfer at any time during the conversation.

Blind Transfer (this will include the original Call ID information)

  1. While on a call, press the Bxfer key.

    For Cisco SPA525 or SPA525G2, press BlindXfer.
    Note:  This will allow the Caller-ID# to show.

  2. Enter the Extension #, Local or Long Distance phone number.
    For Cisco SPA525 or SPA525G2, enter the number to where you want to transfer the call and press Dial. The call is transferred with no further action required.
  3. Press the Dial key.
    Note: You can also use the touch tone command my pressing ##+ extension number when transferring a call.

Transfer Directly to Voicemail

  1. While on a call, press the Bxfer key.
  2. Enter *0 and Extension #.
  3. Press the Dial key.
